I just created a NEW VIDEO that will show you how to photograph the moon. The great thing is that you don’t need a tripod to take good moon photos. Because the moon is so bright you can use a fast shutter speed and get a clear shot.

To choose the minimum shutter speed I use the rule of doubling the focal length of the lens I am using. So if I am shooting with a 200mm lens, I will use a 1/400th second shutter speed.

There are many tutorials online that say you can use the same shutter speed as your focal length, but I have found that with modern digital cameras and high definition sensors you will notice the camera shake using this formula. Doubling the focal length to select your shutter speed works for me the best.

As I write this blog post there will be a super blood moon tonight between 7:30 PM and 10:30 PM Los Angeles time. Use these techniques to get your photo!
